Governor Linda Lingle was in attendance, along with Alan's entire Cabinet, elected officials from all over the state of Hawaii, hundreds of dignitaries and over 1500 supporters.

Sheryl and Michael were included in Governor Lingle's procession as the Governor and each person from her group was individually introduced to the audience as they walked across the field and onto the main stage where they were seated.

Introductions continued for all of the dignitaries, elected officials, VIPs and volunteers as they walked in to be seated. Popular radio personality Alaka'i was Master of Ceremonies, and with her usual flare for island humor and 'talk story', continued to crack everyone up with her well-timed jokes and light hearted banter. (Alaka'i's humor and voice can also be heard on Preston Beachwood's CD, Island Romance. Sheryl and Michael created a humorous narration verse just for her, in their fun-loving song, You And Me, Island Style, which she plays frequently on KPOA radio).

After everyone had been introduced and seated, Alaka'i introduced Sheryl and Michael and invited everyone to stand as Sheryl began to sing.

Michael played light, soft arpeggiated chord changes,

allowing Sheryl the space to sing the Anthem

as she usually performs it, acapella.

The addition of the guitar, to what Sheryl usually sings acapella,

created an Anthem that was both familiar, yet fresh...

with a slight touch of pop style.

As Sheryl hit the high note on, "land of the free", she raised the note an octave to her high falsetto, then paused to allow the note's reverberation against the stadium walls to fade, as which point one could hear a pin drop!

The audience was very generous in their appreciation, as was Governor Lingle and Mayor Arakawa, who thanked Sheryl and Michael as they exited stage right.

The rest of the ceremony included speeches, swearing in of all elected officials, more great jokes and ad libs by Alaka'i...

"A chick is in charge of the state of Hawaii'!"...

as well as great Hawaiian entertainment, dancing and a buffet to finish off the evening.

With the weather being so mind and calm, it made for an absolutely perfect evening, not soon forgotten.

Hawaiian Conch Shells... It is traditional in Hawaii

to blow the Hawaiian Conch Shell to signal important

events, such as blessings, weddings, grand openings and

yes... inaugurations! Mayor Arakawa's Inauguration

had not one, but two shells to signal the beginning

of his inauguration as the new Mayor of Maui County.

Shells are also blown at sunset. On Maui, it is a delightful

sound to hear the conch shells blowing, ushering in of twilight

as Maui says goodnight to the sun!
